Basement Backup Risk Check for St. Louis

Two things drive most St. Louis basement losses. First, groundwater and storm runoff push through basement walls and floor cracks and overwhelm the sump during a hard rain. Second, older neighborhoods run clay lateral lines and combined city sewers that surcharge in heavy rain and back up as black water through the floor drain. Low ground near the River Des Peres, Gravois Creek, and the Meramec floods again and again.

Both help with different problems. A sump pump and pit move groundwater out of a basement, and a battery or water-powered backup keeps it running when a storm knocks out the power. A backwater valve on the sewer line lets waste flow out but closes when water tries to push back in, which is the best defense against a lateral or combined sewer backup through a basement floor drain.

Keep gutters, downspouts, and yard drains clear so rain moves away from the house, grade the soil to fall away from the foundation, add or maintain a sump pump with a backup, ask a plumber about a backwater valve, and know where your main water shut-off is. Missouri American Water and the local sewer district also publish guidance for repeat-backup homes.
